It's been a really long time since the last post and unfortunately, we haven't done much with the house. But, I am trying to get back into the swing of things. There are several small projects in progress - one being the guest bedroom.
I bought a headboard off Joss & Main which I love! I want this room to be a cozy and comfortable space for guests.
Next up: side table, lamp, curtains and a bedspread....
PS: there is currently a debate about the TV in the living room and how big it should be. We'll see who 'wins' this debate.

We're moved in!
Today was a long day but we moved and are (somewhat) settled in. Below are some pics from the day. My mom made dinner and we celebrated our first night in the house. Very exciting!! We feel very comfortable here and we feel like we belong.
Some highlights from the day:
We lost both sets of keys to our old apartment but the management didn't seem to care. They said we can drop them off any time (once we find them in our packed up moving boxes). Ok....
The furniture store gave us a delivery window of 11:49 AM - 2:49 PM. While we were trying to figure out why "49", the truck pulled up at 11:49 AM exactly. Strange... but impressed!
We went with Verizon for cable & internet and they helped us get it set up over the phone after shipping the parts to us. They couldn't of been nicer and we are fully up and running. See you later Comcast!
The mailman (Steve) stopped by to introduce himself and chat. He said it's a great neighborhood and he's there if we need him. Where did we move?!?!

Mr. Handyman
Today was Labor Day but there was no time for rest. We spent the morning cleaning the kitchen and bathroom and trying to get things ready before we move in.
Mike kicked off a new life of yard work with a little help from H & P's mower. Thank you!
More to come later this week...

Day 8
We're getting there... Here are few pics with the stain down. They say it will darken up a bit when the last top coat goes on. Two more days and we're done (with the floors)!

New Project: Fireplace
The fireplace has some real potential. But, it needs a design overhaul. Our initial thoughts are to paint the shelves white, remove the mirrors, paint the back of the shelves a darker color, add some lighting and maybe paint the brick and mantal white (but not sure of that yet).
Here are the before pics:

Here are some inspiration pictures that we may use to redo this area:

New Project: Dining Room Buffet/Bar
We love the built-ins in the dining room and we plan on storing china and other dinnerware in this space. We also want to put in a wine fridge on the lower level and transform this area into something more our style.
A few thoughts... The wood siding on the walls is not attractive and looks pretty dated. So, we are thinking of filling in the spaces with wood filler, sanding it down, adding some dimension and painting this area white. Below are the before pictures and some pictures that we are using for inspiration. This isn't first on the list of things to update but definitely in the top 5. We'll post more pictures as we get closer.

Day 3
Tropical Storm Irene has arrived. There is lots of rain and wind and the lights have flickered here and there. We are at our apartment and we are really hoping the house is not flooding. We are not sure of what the house can handle but we prepped the gutters as best we could. Fingers crossed!
Update: No trees down, just some branches and debris. There was some leaking in one of the basement windows but all in all, not bad! Plus, we kept power all day long. I'll take this for our first hurricane as home owners!

Day 2
We hired Robert Brown flooring to install the wood floors throughout the house except for the kitchen and bathroom. They showed up at 8:30 AM on Saturday and got right to work. Jay (from Robert Brown) recommended that we install unfinished wood and then have it stained. This will allow us to refinish the floors more often than pre-finished wood. Plus, pre-finished wood can be more expensive to refinish. We picked White Oak because it's durable and easily maintainable.

Day 1
We left the closing at 2PM and by 4 PM, construction was under way. Bye bye aqua rugs!

The guest room had linoleum under it and some pipes. We're guessing this was an old bathroom or laundry room.

An old-fashioned feature in the guest room.

More linoleum in the hallway closet.

They were kind enough to leave behind the curtains.
Our First House!
We moved from Los Angeles to New England about four years ago and we have been slowly (and patiently) searching for our first house. New England has some very pretty and traditional architecture but the West Coast and mid-century modern houses always felt right to us. And, we just couldn't shake the feeling.
We are going to share the process of turning this 1955 ranch into our first home. We are so excited to finally be at this point.
To start, here are the pictures that were featured on Red Fin where we first saw the house.
So after a long search, we finally bought our first house! We closed on Friday (after some insurance drama - thanks Hurricane Irene!) and started to get to work right away.
